As I live & breathe...I was so excited to finally see someone I might be able to help! Idon't have much info re.
Seth, in fact your query helped clear up/confirm some of my data. The marriage date that I have for Seth &
Ellen is slightly different - Oct. 15 1845. I got that from a microfilm of the Hocking Co. marriage records....it
could be wrong. Ellen Nelson Bartlett was the daughter of Jesse & Mary Bartlett (Jesse is my
G-G-G-Grandfather), the youngest of 5 children, she was born July 1 1820, either in Ohio or Massachusetts.
Jesse moved to Ohio from MA about 1820 (he shows up on the 1820 OH Census). The 1850 census says Ellen
was born in MA - but the 1860 & '70 say OH. I sorta think it was OH. Ellen married Henry Grippen Oct 1 1840.
The Bartlett Bible says...."Henry Griffin [sic] son of Henry & Ellen Griffin was born August 21 1841". Henry,
the husband, died about the same time (his estate was submitted for probate in 1841). I think when they left
for Iowa they were following Ellen's older brother, Jerome Bartlett (my G-G-Grandfather). Jerome first settled
in Green Bay, Clark Co, Iowa, but by 1855 he had moved to Osceola, Clark Co, IA. Seth Bartlett Davis was
born in Missouri in Feb 1860, but by June 1860 Seth L. & family are living in Osceola. I don't know if they had
been living in MO, or just stopped long enough to have Seth B. And I don't know where in MO!
I have been "tracking" this nice family for 2-3 months....trying to find out when/where Seth & Ellen died & are
buried. I still don't know! By 1870 Henry Griffin (that's the way it appears on the census) has married & is
living next door to Seth & Ellen; in 1880 Henry & family are still in Osceola but I can't find "hide nor hair" of
Seth &/or Ellen. I wouldn't be surprised if Seth had already died....not sure about Ellen. Oh yeah...I haven't
been able to find Seth B. either.....so far! My instincts tell me that both Seth & Ellen died & are buried in
Osceola...but I haven't been able to prove it.
Hope this helps...probably more that you ever wanted to know! If you have any kind of info that might help
me find "where the bodies are buried" (so to speak)...I would appreciate hearing from you.
Lynn Ledford

Name: Alexander Scott 1 2
Sex: M
Birth: Abt 1698 in New Jersey
Death: 1751 in the Shenandoah Valley,Augusta Co.,Virginia
ADDR: the South Branch of the Potomac
WILL: 1727 Elizabeth town,Union Co.,New Jersey
Probate: 1764
Text: One published source of information about the descendents
of Alexander Scott was written by Josephine McCord Vercoe
about 1940 (reprinted about 1990). 2
Text: The Scott Genealogical Quarterly had a whole issue devoted
to Alexander and his descendents. This issue tried to
clean up some of the mistakes in the Vercoe book. 1
Text: Descendent and researcher Jessie Heinzman discovered the evidence
linking this Alexander back to his father and New Jersey. 3
Text: We know Alexander died about 1751 because
on August 28, 1751, Alexander's eldest son, John, posted bond as
administrator of his estate in Augusta
county Virginia. On the same date Daniel
Richardson, John Coningham, Joel Hornback and John Sea were appointed
appraisers of his estate. John Scott died shortly after his father.
Alexander's other older son, James, also died by 1753.
Eventually, on March 22, 1753, Benjamin Scott was appointed
administrator of his father's estate. 4 1
Text: No will was ever found in Augusta Co., only an estate appraisal.
Jessie Heinzman located a 1727 will of an Alexander Scott written in
Elizabethtown, New Jersey. At first, the difference in years and
distance made her think there was no connection. However, it turns
out that the 1727 NJ will was finally administered in 1764 by
Alexander's oldest living son, Benjamin. And it turns out that the Virginian
Benjamin wrote to the court in Perth Amboy, NJ, requesting them to settle the
estate. Of course, why he waited so long until 1764 is somewhat of a mystery.
Alexander's 1727 will mentions his sons
Samuel, John , James, and the child his wife was big with. 3
Text: Further investigations by Jessie Heinzman found the records and will of
this Alexander's father, also named Alexander. 3
Text: The Scott Genealogical Quarterly had found an Alexander Scott
who came to Virginia in April, 1701.
He was among a group of 25 persons transported by Robert Bolling of
Bristol Parish, Charles Co., VA. The Scott Gen. Quarterly article
had suggested that this
immigrant Alexander might be the same as our ancestor Alexander, but
in light of the New Jersey evidence, this theory is thrown out. 1
Text: Various Scott family publications give the 1698 birthyear, but I don't know
that there is really any basis for believing it.
These same publications guessed that he was born in England, but
others believed he was one of many Scotch-Irish who settled
in that part of Virginia in the early 1700s. 1 2 5
Text: We also know that Alexander was living in Augusta county, Virginia, on the
South Branch of the Potomac river in 1737, when his son, David, was born there. 5
Note:
BIOGRAPHY-BIRTH-CHILDREN-DEATH: ``A genealogical history of
the Scott family : descendants of Alexander Scott who came to Augusta Co.,

Note:
BIOGRAPHY-EVERYTHING: Scott Genealogical Quarterly Vol. 6, #2, July 1992.
is a special issue devoted to Alexander and his descendants.
IMMIGRATION: An Alexander Scott came to Augusta Co. VA in April, 1701.

Name: Alexander Scott 1
Sex: M
Birth: 1698 in NJ
Death: 1751 in Shenandoah Valley, Augusta Co., VA
Note:
One published source of information about the descentents of Alexander Scott was written by Josephine McCord Vercoe about 1940
(reprinted 1990).
The Scott Genealogical Quarterly had a whole issue devoted to Alexander and his descendents. This issue tried to clean up some of the
mistakes in the Vercoe book.
Descendent and researcher Jessie Heinzman discovered the evidence linking this Alexander back to his father and New Jersey.
We know Alexander died about 1751 because on August 18, 1751, Alexander's eldest son, John, posted bond as administrator of his
estate in Augusta County, Virginia. On the same date Daniel Richardson, John Coningham, Joel Hornback and John Sea were appointed
appraisers of his estate. John Scott died shortly after his father. Alexander's other older son, James also died by 1753. Eventually, on
March 22, 1753, Benjamin Scott was appointed administrator of his father's estate.
No will was ever found in Augusta Co., only an estate appraisal. Jessie Heinzman located a 1727 will of a Alexander Scott written in
Elizabethtown, NJ. At first, the difference in years and distance made her think there was no connection. However, it turns out that the
1727 NJ will was finally adminstered in 1764 by Alexander's oldest living son, Benjamin. And it turns out that the Virginian Benjamin
wrote to the court in Perth Amboy, NJ, requesting them to settle the estate. Of course, why he waited so long until 1764 is somewhat of a
mystery. Alexander's 1727 will mentions his sons Samuel, John, James, and the child his wife was big with.
Further investigation by Jessie Heizman found the records and will of this Alexander's father, also named Alexander.
Alexander is also known to have been living in Augusta Co., VA, on the South Branch of the Potomac river in 1737, when his son, David,
was born there.
And ND Hughes writes:
This record clearly identifies Alexander Scott as a member of a large group of Scotch-Irish who emigrated to Pennsylvania and Virginia
between 1717 and 1775. The Scotch-Irish were people whose ancestors had been poor tenant farmers in the Lowlands of Scotland, in
1610 King James 1 of England offered these people cheap land in Ulster county of Northern Ireland if they wold keep the Irish under
control since military attempts to conquor them had failed. During the hundred years after 1610, many Lowland Scots emigrated to Ulster
country at the King's invitation. They were all farmers, all very poor, and all members of the Presbyterian Church.
In Ireland their situation did not improve: they were still poor garmers frequently on the verge of starvation. News of better land and other
opportunities in the American Colonies started the large emigration of the Scotch-Irish that began in 1717 and continued for the next 50
years. The earliest of these emigrants settled in the frontier county of western PA and the Shennandoah Valley of Virginia.
Alexander Scott was one of these early Scotch-Irish emigrants. He was living in Augusta county, Virginia, (now Hampshire, Hardy,
Pendleton, and Grant counties of West Virginia) on the South Branch of the Potomac River in 1737, the year his son, David, was born
there. He was at least 36 years old then if it is assumed he was at least 20 years old when his eldest son, John, was born in 1721. He and
his family were part of a frontier community of Scotch-Irish families far removed from the aristocratic English families of tidewater Virginia.
Alexander Scott lived here until his death 14 years later, there is found no mention of his wife or wives.
Alexander Scott died in Augusta County, Virginia shortly before August 28,1751, the date his son, John, signed a bond as administrator
of his estate. John Scott died just a few months after his father apparently leaving his father's estate unsettled, James Scott, another son of
Alexander, died shortly fefore October 27, 1751, the date his will was filed. In his will, James Scott mentions by name his three sisters,
Sara, Phebe, and Rachel, and hius three brothers, Benjamin, Adonijah, and David. He states that Adonijah and David aare "Infants" under
legal age.
On March 22, 1753 Benjamin Scott, the eldest living son of Alexander Scott, was appointed administrator of his father's estate and also
qualified as administrator of his brother James estate. On August 19, 1762, James and Joseph Scott, orphan sons of John Scott, chose
their uncle David Scott, as their guardian. Information concerning the children oa Alexander Scott is taken from "The Family Tree of
Alexander Scott on file in the University of West Virginia Library at Morgantown, West Virginia. This report was written by ND Hughes
written in 1974.
Listed as Tithable in 1750, so probably died in 1751.
