HENRY SNELL born 18 Nov 1756 in Germany. He married (1) circa 1780 CHRISTENA MILLER BORN 4 DEC 1761, Germany , (daughter of Phillip Jacob Miller and Christina), died 07 Mar 1815, Warren County OH, buried Bassinger Cem, Warren County, OH. Married (2) 15 Dec 1817 in Clermont County, Ohio, Permelia Strong, born circa 1784, Connecticut, died circa 1860, prob Warren County, Ohion, buried Bassinger cem? Warren Co, OH. Henry died 06 Oct 1827, Warren Co, OH, buried Bassinger Cemetery, Warren County Ohio. Henry arrived at Philadelphia on 31 Oct 1771 aboard the brigantine 'Recovery' with his parents, a brother, and two sisters. This conclusion is reached after having examined several sources. First, an article found in the "History of Shelby County Illinois-1891" contains a biographical record of Grederick P. Snell in which is recorded his understanding of the story of father and grandfather, his grandfather being William Henry Snell, immigrant. The article states that Henry was sold after he landed on these shores to pay his passage. Secondly, since no Henry Snell appears on any ship's passenger list of the period, we conclude that he was under age 21. Women and under-age children were not required to take oaths of allegiance. The book, RECORD OF INDENTURES 1771-1773 lists on p. 24-5 Henry Schnell's indenture on Nov 18, 1771 (Henry's 15th Birthday) to John Care of Philadelphia, Bristol Twp, for six years to pay his cost of passage -18 pounds. About nine years later Henry married CHRISTENA MILLER. Their first 9 children were born near Hagerstown, Maryland where Henry was a cooper, a trade he had learned during his indenture. It is recorded that in 1777 in Washinton County Maryland, Henry Schnell repeated and subscribed "The Oath of Fidelity and Support to the State of Maryland." There is a deed dated 02 Jan 1787 and recorded in Washington County conveying a hous and lot to Henry Snell in Elizaabeth Town for "six pounds specie."
