This is written by David M. Britt in 1969.
My authotity for the early history of the Britt Family is the Late Kate Britt Biggs of Lumberton , wife of the late F.K. Biggs. She spent alot of time and money in obtaining records pertaining to the Britt family. The late JUdge Henery A. Grady , a native of Duplin Co. and many years a judge of the superior court, advised that the family came about during the 12th Century when the King of England proclaimed that all citizens of the country would adopt family names. He says that our people migrated from Brittany France to England after the conquest by William the Conqueror. Inasmuch as our people adopted the family name of Britt, sometimes spelled Brett. One William Britt migrated from Kent England, to Massachusetts. In 1645,he was one the original proprietors of Bridge Water, Mass. and had at least three or more sons: William, Elihu, Nathaniel. It is thought that some of his desendants migrated to N.C. in the earl 18th Century.Grimes Will Book list one Samuel Britt as having witnessed a will in N.C. in 1706. Samuel and other Britts were listed in colonial and state records as having served as jurors in N.C.as early as 1739. Such records as there are indcate that the first N.C. Britts settled on the Neuse River, evidently in parts of what are now Johnston and Wayne Counties. Conflicts with Indians in that area were frequent, causing the Britts to move away from there. Some of them located in Sampson County and others traveled futher and settled in Robeson County, then Bladen County. It is defintely established that the Britts were living in Robeson County prior to the Revolutionary War. Revoltionary army vouchers reveal that Samuel Britt and his son Samuel served in the war from the district which included Bladen County. The 1790 census records disclose that there were five Britts who were heads of families in Robeson County.

Maria was born in Grisbacka village. After her husbands sudden death she was left with several small children.
She is noted as poor in the records. A note in the parish records says that she had endured public disgrace outside the church for her complicity in theft.
